Are you a Black Owned Business Owner
Yes
No

When Target began pulling back from its public DEI commitments, we asked our community what they really thought.

In just 24 hours, we launched a pulse-check survey with five key questions:

  • What would it take for you to support Target again?

  • Are you currently shopping there?

  • If you stopped, why?

  • Have you noticed a change in their support for Black-owned brands?

  • Do you believe they still value Black customers?

The message was clear:
Our community doesn’t want to go back.
We want accountability, action, and ownership of our future.

On Monday,

April 21, 2025,

we launched

a 24hr

community

A community report from Buy From A Black Woman

We are the answer

Buy From A Black Woman is an internationally recognized nonprofit advocating for Black-owned businesses,

especially those led by Black Women, since 2016.

We’ve partnered with H&M, American Express, the U.S. Treasury, and the White House. We’ve won awards, conducted national research, and helped thousands of business owners stay visible and supported.

We don’t just create platforms,

we create power.

The numbers speak for themselves.

From 145 responses in just 24 hours:

  • 93% say they’ve stopped shopping at Target

  • 74% believe Target does not value Black customers or Black-owned businesses

  • 44% say support for Black-owned brands at Target has decreased

Respondents included Black Women (106), Black business owners (18), Black Men (6), and Non-Black Allies (15). Responses came from over 25 U.S. states, including Georgia, California, Illinois, and New York, a diverse community speaking with one voice.

“We made Target cool. We brought the culture. And then they pulled the rug out from under us. But we’ve been our own solution and we still are.”

We have Our Own Shelves

Launching August 2025,

in Georgia, USA

Black-owned businesses deserve more than a moment. They deserve shelf space, foot traffic, visibility, and consistent investment.

We Have Our Own Shelves is a new statewide initiative spotlighting Black-owned storefronts through curated in-store pop-ups, strategic marketing, and intentional community engagement, starting right here in Georgia.

Georgia is where we live, work, organize and it’s where we begin.

Throughout Black August, we’ll be activating local businesses across the state, celebrating ownership, circulating dollars, and making it clear: we don’t need permission to show up for each other.
